How Castle School Actively Promotes British Values and SMSC

At The Castle School we aim to provide a whole education which develops students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural wellbeing (SMSC) and prepares students for life in modern Britain including promoting British values.  We provide students with a wealth of opportunities to explore their own values and beliefs, develop self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence, distinguish right from wrong, participate fully in a democratic society and acquire an appreciation of the diversity and richness of other cultures.

British Values

We believe all students need to learn about the following British values:

Democracy

Developing an understanding of how citizens can influence decision making through the democratic process.

Individual Liberty

Developing students’ understanding that the freedom to choose and hold other faiths and beliefs is protected in law.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

Developing acceptance that other people having different faiths or beliefs to oneself (or having none) should be accepted and tolerated and should not be the cause of prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour.

The Rule of Law

Developing students’ appreciation that living under the rule of law protects individual citizens and is essential for their wellbeing and safety. Pupils have an understanding that there is a separation of power between the executive and the judiciary, and that while some public bodies such as the police and the army can be held to account through Parliament, others such as the courts maintain independence.

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Wellbeing

We actively encourage students to:

  • Explore beliefs and experience; respect faiths, feelings and values; enjoy learning about oneself, others and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity; reflect. (Spiritual)
  • Recognise right and wrong; respect the law; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned views. (Moral)
  • Investigate moral issues; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict; engage with the 'British Values'. (Social)
  • Appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain's parliamentary system; participate in culture opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity. (Cultural)

We aim to develop these skills and values across the curriculum and throughout school life through:
