Activities you can do with your son/daughter ü As performing is worth SO much of the overall mark, this is an area that parents can really support. ü Please encourage regular and consistent practice. Short regular bursts is far more effective than long practices followed by long periods of abstinence! ü Please encourage independent learning. We give out handouts regularly. These must be kept safe. We don’t issue revision notes at the end of the course, everything that they get issued during the course is sufficient. ü By all means listen in to your child’s homework tasks, take an interest, maybe ask spot questions when the radio is on at home (eg how many beats in a bar? Is this music major or minor, what instrument is playing the main tune etc). ü Attending live music events is a great way of consolidating work in school. If you are in a position where you can take your child to live music, we would encourage this as much as possible. If not, there is always the radio or CD collections. The secret is breadth and depth. It is not just about classical music. ü Some homework tasks will be more challenging than others. If your child needs help, by all means give assistance on occasions. However if your child is regularly needing help or you feel they are struggling a bit too much, then please contact me & we will put any necessary intervention in place. ü If students start becoming unreliable with homework or practical tasks or if they are regularly turning up not prepared for lessons, normal school sanctions will apply. We will always contact parents if this is the case as there may be underlying reasons that we are not aware of. ü The Set works are Haydn Clock Symphony Movement 2, Beatles Sergeant Pepper (With a Little Help, Within you, Without you, Lucy in the Sky). The Areas of Study are Western Classical 1650- 1910, Western Classical since 1910, Traditional music, Popular Music.

GCSE PE
Course overview. The course is split into two components. The Theoretical component of the course is 60%. This is broken down into two papers; both of which are 1 hour 15 minutes long. Paper 1 looks at the human body, fitness and movement analysis. This work was covered in Year 10 and can be found in your son/daughter’s yellow exercise book. Paper 2 content is being covered in Year 11 and can be found in their purple exercise book. This covers sports psychology, socio-cultural influences and health, fitness and wellbeing.
The non-exam assessment consists of the practical component of the course and a piece of coursework, accounting for 40% of the whole qualification. Students must now put forward just two activities from the list below. This year there are less restrictions on which sports they can put forward, so they could do either 2 team sports, 2 individual sports or 1 individual and 1 team sport. Please contact PE for further restrictions as there are some combinations that are not allowed. For example students cannot submit snowboarding and skiing, they can do one or the other. With no live moderation taking place this year, students will be assessed by video evidence in one of their sports. Therefore if a student is performing outside of school it is essential that they are recorded playing in a fully competitive situation. The video can not be edited and should be shot from a wide angle so that you can see both the performer and the rest of the game. Again please contact the PE department for further clarification on the video evidence required.
For the coursework students need to analyse themselves as a performer in one of these sports. Each student has been provided with a handbook which states what needs to be included in each section and examples of low, medium and high quality work. This handbook along with your son/daughter’s work can be found on Google Classroom.

These sessions will provide coursework support as well as revision sessions. · Encourage your son/daughter to watch elite sport – This helps with their application of knowledge, a key component of both coursework and exams. Exam questions are applied to a variety of sports and students need to understand the requirements of the different performers. You could question your son/daughter on how xxxx would impact on the performance of a xxxx. · Encourage your son/daughter to keep abreast of news stories within the world of sport. Reading around the subject will again help with the more advanced skills required to achieve the higher marks. Key websites include; |

Photography
Course overview
AQA GCSE ART & DESIGN – Photography
Students learn to be technically competent using a DSLR camera and to manipulate the various settings with confidence. They explore multiple approaches to photography, including digital manipulation and manual editing processes. They will also be exposed to a variety of photographers, artists and creative makers to inform and inspire their own practices.
This year, coursework projects will run up until the end of year 11 in place of the exam, which AQA have cancelled for all of the arts subjects. Instead, students will work on just the coursework element, using lessons to plan, research and generate a range of work which will also involve them producing a final piece in a ten hour (two day) mock exam in February.
The course this year is 100% coursework, one large project that will be supported by a smaller portfolio of work. Students generally work independently on their projects with the help of teachers and are able to drive the work in directions that interest them personally. The course is highly engaging, it challenges their creativity and students who complete the course gain a huge amount of experience and resilience in trying to achieve that perfect shot.
Evaluating and presenting final images (students will be expected to get images professionally printed for their coursework and for their exam) Portfolios are created electronically. Access to a computer and DSLR at home although not compulsory is useful.

Activities you can do with your son/daughter… · Using a topic heading e.g. Hajj students can produce a revision card with key pieces of information on it. Mum and Dad can then test them on the information! · Students can produce a revision glossary of the key terms linked to Christianity and Islam. A list of words is available from their RS teacher. · Mind mapping is a useful revision strategy. Students can take a topic like ‘The five pillars of Islam’ and produce a map of the five pillars including illustrations and keywords. · There are lots of ‘Youtube’ clips available on key topics like belief in God, how did the world begin and capital punishment. Hearing a topic being discussed is a useful way of reviewing knowledge and also developing an understanding of different people’s attitudes to that particular topic. · Write responses to exam questions under timed conditions at home. Students can submit these for marking to their RS teacher.

Sports Studies (Cambridge National)
Course overview
The course is split into 4 units, each worth 25%. Unit 1 (Reducing the risk of sports injuries) is assessed by an external exam, which is 1 hour long. This was sat in Year 10, however there is still an opportunity for this to be re-taken if grades need to be improved.
The three other NEA units are all assessed through coursework; Unit 2 – Applying principles of training, Unit 3 - The body's response to physical activity and Unit 4 – Sports nutrition.
The NEA units are approx 10 hours each of internal assessment, externally moderated.
All tasks will be submitted by the student and marked. Work will be returned to the student if corrections are required. Work will not be judged as completed until a grade has been achieved (L1 Pass, Pass, Merit or Distinction). Students can use the Sport catch up clinic to make amendments to their work.

Activities you can do with your son/daughter
· Use revision techniques identified at start of handbook · Use revision workbook to test son/daughter – answers can be found at back of book. · Read through assignments before submission. - For a pass the work should describe to you the topic/content. - For a merit the work should explain changes or impact on performance. - For a distinction the work should analyse strengths/weaknesses and suggest how improvements can be made. (Use the mark scheme supplied with each task to identify exact content) · Encourage son/daughter to attend catch up clinic on a Monday lunchtime with Mr Wills |
